Memorial Drags rev up at strip

The Big Island Auto Cub will hold its Memorial Day drags Saturday and Sunday at Hilo Drag Strip.

Gates open at 8 a.m. both days, and admission for adults is $7 and keiki 6-12 are $1. The tech shed closes at 11 a.m.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Big Island Auto Club, however it’s the 37th Memorial Day drags at the notorious strip.

Racers will qualify both days for ET bracket racing, junior dragsters, pro bikes, imports/sports compact racing & Augie’s Door Slammer Shootout (9.50 cut off).

Included is a special appearance by “Pyro” Pete Comandini in his jet-fueled car.

Basketball camp in Honokaa

The Big Island All-Stars Honokaa basketball camp will be held June 4-6 at Honokaa parks and recreation gym for children who just completed kindergarten through the eighth grade.

The fee is $50 (includes instruction, T-shirt and a basketball), payable to Big Island All Stars. Write “Honokaa Basketball Camp” in memo and mail along with application to Daphne Honma, P.O. Box 355, Paauilo, HI 96776.

Walk-ins will be accepted, but the camp is limited to the 90 applicants in each session. Applications can be picked up at Honokaa Gym from Cheyenne Meyer or at Honokaa High and Intermediate School (ask for Daphne Honma) or online at bigislandallstars.weebly.com.

June 4: 8:30 a.m.–noon (K-3); 1-4:30 p.m. (4-8)

June 5: 8:30 a.m.–noon (K-3) 1– 4:30 p.m. (4-8)

June 6: 8 a.m.–noon (K-3) and (4-8)

Golf tournament

The Nobu Yamauchi Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on June 11, Kamehameha Day, the Hilo Municipal Golf Course, with a 7 a.m. shotgun start.

The entry fee is $125 and covers green fee, cart, par-3 closest-to-the pin, team prizes and lunch at Kim’s at the Hilo Muni.

Funds raised will be used for the Nobu Yamauchi RBI travel teams, RBI youth league teams, and partial scholarship for RBI players who will be attending college.

The team with the lowest low gross will win (tw) 32-inch Samsung Smart TVs.

The grand prize will be a Las Vegas Vacation Package which includes four round trip airfares and a four-night stay at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino. This prize will be awarded to the low net team that finishes in 13th place. This is the 13th year of the Nobu Yamauchi RBI Organization.
